Loumee Shinmee Apun Lup (LOUSHAL) urged the Government of Manipur to utilise the rice produced in the state in various schemes instead of importing from other states.

LOUSHAL has submitted a four-point representation to the chief minister on October 26 regarding the matter, said LOUSHAL president Mutum Churamani at a press conference held at Manipur Press Club on Thursday.

In the representation, LOUSHAL urged the state government to procure the rice produced by the farmers of the state to be utilised in Child Development Scheme (ICDS) and Mid-day-meal programme, instead of procuring from other states. “It is high time we investigate how far the rice being utilised is benefiting the childrens and mothers under the scheme,” said Churamani.

Advocating the flavour and nutritional value of the rice grown in the state, he urged the state government to allocate a separate amount in the budget and procure the rice. It will not only benefit the farmers of the state, but it will also help in achieving the United Nations’ SDG Goal 2 Target 1, he added.

In the representation, LOUSHAL also urged the state government to appoint an agricultural producer commissioner, consultation of farmers while taking up irrigation projects, and reconstitution of Manipur Land Use Board.
