Nagaland State Disaster Management Agency (NSDMA), Home department on Monday issued weather warnings for the coming days.

According to a circular issued by NSDMA (home department), joint chief executive officer Johnny Ruangmei, the state has observed a spike in weather activity during the past weeks with rainfall reaching 191.25mm in Dimapur, 351mm in Peren, and 342mm in the state’s capital, Kohima. The rainfall data was obtained from NSDMA weather system.

Informing that there is a “high likelihood” of flash flooding and water logging due to heavy rains in the foothills sector and lowland parts of Nagaland, Ruangmei particularly mentioned about “Dhansiri and Chathe rivers” in experiencing large flow of water due to the prolonged spell of heavy rains in the hill sectors.

“The adjoining areas of Dhansiri and Chathe rivers, Dhomokia area and the areas adjoining Dhansiri river may be flooded while landslides activity may also occur in some regions of the state due to the continued rainfall activity”, said Ruangmei.

Deptts & agencies advised to make necessary arrangements to face any eventualities

With a likelihood of road blockages in many pockets of the state in the coming days, Johnny Ruangmei has called upon and advised the department (s) and agency (s) responsible for maintaining public infrastructures and essential commodities to make necessary arrangements and contingency plans to meet any eventualities during the period.

“State capital, Kohima, and most other parts of the Nagaland are also covered with the current incessant monsoon rains and during this period, thunderstorm and lightning with widespread rainfall is expected in Peren, Kohima, Wokha, Mon, and Tuensang districts”, he added.

However, Ruangmei stated that light to moderate rain/thundershowers is “very likely” to occur in remaining parts of the state which is likely to become “intense”.

These conditions’ call for sensitive weather condition for the entire state of Nagaland as there could frequent spell of intermittent rain in the coming days and it is therefore important to take necessary precautionary measures during this time and exercise “caution” from lightning strikes and gale winds which may cause disruption in communication and connectivity.

Meanwhile, while urging the public to be vigilant during this monsoon period, the NSDMA, home department, Nagaland, has also requested them not to shelter under large trees or picnic near river banks in order to prevent unnecessary risk to life from lightning and flash floods.

It also requested all the District Disaster Management Agencies (DDMAs) and line departments responsible for attending to emergencies caused by natural calamities, to be alert and save lives and properties during this monsoon period.
