Earthquake measuring 6.4 magnitude jolts Assam, tremors felt in other Northeast region

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Assam Chief Minister Sarbanand Sonowal after he heard the news and assured all possible help from the union government.

A strong earthquake measuring 6.4 Magnitude hit 43km West of Tezpur, Assam at 7:51 IST (Lat: 26.69 & Long: 92.36), according to the National Center for Seismology.

Strong tremors were felt in parts of the Northeast as well as North Bengal. Reports suggested that the quake has caused extensive damage to property and land across the region.

The tremors were repeatedly felt in several parts of the northeast including neighbouring Bhutan, forcing people to run out of their homes.
