The Commanding Officer of 46 Assam Rifles, Colonel Viplav Tripathi, his wife, and an eight-year-old son, and four soldiers who were part of a Quick Reaction Team (QRT) were killed in an ambush by armed militants near S Sehken village, Singngat sub-division, Churachandpur district, India-Myanmar border in Manipur.

The attack considered one of the deadliest in recent times took place at around 11 am in Manipur’s Churachandpur district.

According to sources, Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) were used by the militants in the attack before firing several rounds.

No group has so far claimed responsibility as yet, according to police sources.

The attack has been vehemently condemned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh tweeted that a counter-operation has been launched to track down the terrorists.

Congress also condemned the attack.

Zomi Chiefs Association (ZCA) has also strongly condemned the attack. In a condemnation letter, the ZCA said that the attack led to the colossal loss of precious lives.

“Churachandpur District witnessed relative peace, security, and development after a long spell of night-marish militancy due to the relentless efforts of the Government and its security forces. This cold-blooded incident jeopardized and put at peril, the life and security of innocent peace-loving Zomi villagers residing in the area. It shocked the general public who eagerly awaits a final solution to the political negotiations between the Government and Soo groups. ZCA appeals all Zomi Chiefs and villagers along the Indo-Myanmar border to cooperate with the security forces in their hunt for perpetrators of these heinous acts”, said ZCA.

ZCA also asked the government of India to exert all measures required to apprehend, book, and penalize the culprits as per the law of the land and carry on unhindered, political dialogue with SoO groups in the public interest. “We express our deepest condolences to the brave and martyred soldiers who made supreme sacrifices for the nation. May their souls rest in peace,” said ZCA.
