Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh on Wednesday assured the members of Pandit Loishang (Maru Loishang) to resolve the recent row over the construction of structures related to Hinduism at the Loishang’s premises in Palace Compound, Imphal.

Biren assured to construct the Laishangs of the three deities of Sanamahism — Ibudhou Pakhangba, Nongshaba and Yumjao Lairembi — in front of them, said Ngariyambam Khomba of Maru Loishang on Wednesday, while addressing media persons at the Loishang.

The row erupted on October 24 when Amaiba and Amaibis (indigenous priests and priestess) protested and burnt down the two contentious structures — one for a cow and a calf and another to display the wheels of Kang — being built at Maru Loishang’s premises. They have maintained that the forced construction of Hindu temple allegedly on Pandit Loishang’s premises is impinging on the age-old sanctity of the indigenous religion of Meitei. They have accused the BJP-led government in Manipur of usurping Pandit Loisang’s land and undertaking a Hindu construction on its premises against the will and consent of Pandit Loishang.

The construction is being undertaken by the Govindajee Temple Board, of which CM Biren is the president.

Ngariyambam Khomba said that they had a meeting with CM Biren on October 25 at the Chief Minister Secretariat to discuss the issue. And on Wednesday, Biren assured not to use the second structure which was supposed to house the wheels of Kang. But the chief minister said that the other structure where the cow and the calf would be kept would remain, Khomba added.

Khomba urged the people of the state to present their views on the assurances given by the chief minister. An agreement would be signed with the chief minister only after considering the views of the people of the state, he added.

He further asserted that BJYM president and section officer of the temple board, Barish Sharma should apologise to the people of the state for his unruly behaviour towards the Amaiba and Amaibis.
