Coalition Against Drugs and Alcohol (CADA) secretary general Geetchandra Mangang asserted that since the 2018 multi-crore drug haul case was fought between the Manipur government and Lhukhosei Zou, no private individual or organisation can approach a higher court against the judgement acquitting Lhukhoshei Zou and six others. The government should take the democratic protests of the people seriously and file an appeal in a higher court within the prescribed period, he added.
Geetchandra was speaking at a sit-in against the acquittal of former Chandel ADC chairman Lhukhosei Zou by an ND&PS court on December 17, 2020, held at Kodompokpi Mamang Leikai Keithel Shang, Imphal West. It was jointly organised by Yaipha Ihou Women’s Association and CADA Unit, a release said.
He further said that people have been suspicious about the case since the beginning of the Investigation when a sample of the drugs seized was said to be lost. So, in order to clear the doubts in the minds of the people and to punish those involved in the drugs business, the government should appeal to a higher court, he added.
The release also said that a sit-in was also held at Khanarok Mayai Leikai Community Hall, Imphal East District, jointly organised by Khanarok Women’s Development Association and CADA. CADA vice president Dipanjit Ningthoujam delved on why the government should appeal to a higher court and initiate a re-investigation into the case.
The release added that a sit-in was also held at Hiyanglam Wabagai Tera Pishak, Kakching District. CADA vice president Ningthoujam Doren spoke about the issue on which the protest was being held.
Different slogans were also shouted at the end of the protests, the release added.
