Stating that the drivers continue to perform their duties in the interest of the people during the COVID-19 pandemic, the union’s general secretary Maimom Anil urged the people in both the hills and the valley to have sympathy for them.

All Manipur Road Transport Driver’s & Motor Worker’s Union on Thursday observed the 32nd Driver’s Day at the union’s office complex at MG Avenue with a solemn function. Floral tributes were paid to the late drivers by members of the union and their family members.
All Manipur Road Transport Driver’s & Motor Worker’s Union general secretary Maimom Anil said that the day has been observed since 1990 remembering the agitation against the atrocities meted out to the drivers community.
He further said that the drivers plying along the NH-2, NH-53 and NH-37 have been facing lots of challenges including bad road conditions, atrocities by unknown armed individuals, kidnapping for extortion, amongst others. He also informed that eight drivers died in 2020 while performing their duties. But the drivers continue to provide essential commodities during these hard times, he added.
Stating that the drivers continue to perform their duties in the interest of the people during the COVID-19 pandemic, he urged the people in both the hills and the valley to have sympathy for them. Treat them as friends and not enemies, he said and appeal to the people to stand by them.
Anil also informed that Rs 10,000 each have been given to the family members of the eight drivers who passed away in 2020 by the union. Aids were also provided to four old aged drivers, he added.
