Stories of compassion and heroic acts abound during the pandemic. Such stories inspire us to do better, to be more humane.

The heavy rain did not deter nurse Songamla Keishing, NMA of Lamlang Gate and her husband Alexis Siranao to walk an hour and administer vaccines to the villagers of Changjirat, a locality of Lamlang Gate, Ukhrul.

Speaking to this correspondent, Songamla Keishing said that they moved out early in the morning from Ukhrul Headquarters by vehicle, but due to the heavy downpours, their vehicle could not travel further than Seikhor. So, the couple travelled by foot to reach Changjirat and administered regular immunisation to the children and pregnant women.

“Songamla Keishing, ANM of Lamlang Gate  administered Pentavalent vaccine 1st dose to 4 children, second dose to three children and third dose to a child. Moreover, PCV ( Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine) first dose was given to four children, OPV (Oral Polio Vaccine) first dose to four children, second dose to three children and third dose to a child and FIPV (Fractionated Inactivated Polio Vaccine) first dose to four children and second dose to a child. Rotavirus first dose to four children, second dose to three children and third dose to a child and ANC to two pregnant women with TT dose” stated Dr. Pamza Luikham, District Immunization Officer of Ukhrul.

Songamla informed, “it was not the first time my husband had accompanied me. He often travelled with me when it was time for immunisation.”

In a video which is being widely circulated in WhatsApp, her husband was seen carrying the vaccine box wearing banana leaves for protection against the rain.

Someone who saw the video shared that “one could write off this story as someone doing their duty. But, let us not forget that to overcome these desperate times, we need commitment and dedication in every walk of life. It is compassion and sacrifice that is going to bring healing. And more respect to the husband for his support.”

They married in 2014 and hail from Sirarakhong village and have two children, a boy and a girl.
