The Family Adoption Programme is a new initiative of the National Medical Commission (NMC) aimed to provide healthcare services to rural areas/ outskirts of towns or cities of the country in an equitable manner as well as to impart community-oriented training to the budding Indian Medical Graduates. This program was mandated by the NMC to be included in the MBBS curriculum on 31st March 2022. SAHS is the first medical college in the state to implement family adoption programme.
As part of the programme, each MBBS student will be assigned 2-5 families to visit on a regular basis in order to gather family history, conduct clinical examinations and provide counseling under the supervision of a Mentor (Assistant Professor/Senior Resident/ Tutor/ Medical Social Worker).
The students will function as the first point of contact for any health issues within the community. Also, the families will be assisted by the students for referral and hospitalization if required. The students will analyze the generated data for improving health outcomes and evidence-based clinical practices.
The community will be provided with annual diagnostic follow-up camps through this initiative. This programme aims at developing medical graduates who are in connect with the society. They are expected to be more compassionate and in sync with the realities of the lives of the population in the society. As our environment has a strong connection to our health, this program promotes the planting of trees or medicinal plants around adopted families at the onset of monsoon.
