Hill Areas Committee (HAC) has called an emergency meeting on Monday, September 6 to discuss the current political situation arising out of the induction of nine Assembly Constituencies from unscheduled areas into the HAC.
An emergency notification issued by chairman of HAC, K Leshiyo said that he “desires” to have an emergency meeting on September 6 at 11 am at the chamber of HAC chairman to discuss the situation related to the induction of valley MLAs in the HAC.
A notification in this regard asked all the HAC members to attend the meeting.
Meanwhile, Kuki Students Organisation (KSO) and Hmar Students’ Association (HAS) said that the tribal populace of Churachandpur district stood against the “anti-tribal attitude” of the chief minister N Biren Singh-led government of Manipur and its move to induct valley based MLAs in the HAC.
Pointing out that the move was in contravention to Article 371C of the Indian Constitution, KSO and HAS alleged that the rules of business of the state assembly was “total anti-tribal.
The two student bodies of Churachandpur District on Sunday held a meeting at Kuki Students’ Organisation, Churachandpur office and adopted a resolution to declare a ‘non-cooperation’ movement against the government of Manipur until the HAC bill is passed and the order to induct valley MLAs is revoked.
The two students’ organisations said, “we can’t afford to witness the hypocritical display of this government’s double standard towards tribal people”. The student bodies appealed to the general public of Churachandpur, not to attend the launching of ‘go to village 2.0’ by the government of Manipur scheduled for Monday at the Peace Ground, Tuibong to show “our resentment”.
It may be mentioned that the Speaker of Manipur Legislative Assembly had halted its controversial order inducting eight MLAs from valley districts as members of HAC for now. The memberships of eight MLAs in the Hill Areas Committee are hereby kept in abeyance until further orders, said a statement issued by Manipur Legislative Assembly Secretary K Meghajit Singh.
