MPCC questions motives for extending 'ineffective' curfew

Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) on Wednesday questioned the BJP-led Manipur government’s motives for extending curfew, which, the party said, has proved to be ineffective and failed to control COVID-19 pandemic. The opposition party also demanded the government to spell out COVID victims’ compensation policies.

The issues were raised during a joint meeting of MLAs and former MLAs of the Congress party at Congress Bhawan, Imphal. The focus of the meeting was on the present condition of COVID-19 pandemic and political developments within the Congress, said a party source.

The meeting resolved to stand affirm in fighting against the alarming situation of COVID-19 pandemic as usual. It also drew the attention of the government in ensuring the basic amenities of health care and other necessary benefits among all the people affected due to COVID-19.

It also resolved to extend support in providing all the possible means and ends which may be availed through the government-sponsored schemes and under the Disaster Management Act, 2005.

The meeting decided to further strengthen the party organisation and its movements arose as a new political development within the party. MPCC should try to reach out to every section of the state so as to recognise and acknowledge the common needs of the state’s welfare through outreaching goals by Congress workers, it added.

MPCC should fight collectively with all possible force and energy in the coming assembly election to be held in 2022 to bring the party into power in Manipur with absolute majority, the release stated.

According to party source, the marathon meeting that began at 9.00 concluded at 2.00 pm. It was chaired by MPCC president N Loken Singh, CLP leader O Ibobi Singh, CWC member Gaikhangam, former presidents of the state unit of the party TN Haokip and M Okendro, along with other MLAs and former MLAs except few who endorsed prior information to the president of MPCC for their absence.
