Farmers of Saikot sub-division, Churachandpur took things literally into their own hands now as officials looking after Khuga Dam failed to repair sections of the canal that was destroyed recently by rain waters.
Farmers from different villages of these areas have not been able to cultivate their land this year due to water shortage propounded by the lack of water from the canal.
Under the leadership of Saikot Sub-Division Demand cum Development Committee chairman Timothy Z Zote, the farmers had informed the minister of Water Resource Department. He sent concern EE, Churachandpur for surveying the effected areas.
“However, till today, we have not seen any action from the government department. That’s why farmers met at Ngurte Community Hall and after consultation, they all agreed to contribute money for starting the repair work,” Pu Zote said.
With the money they pooled together, farmers were able to hire two excavators and a tractor. They organised a public work involving all the farmers since August 17, 2021. “If all goes well, the water may soon be able to reach Dumsau and Tuaiteng villages,” he added.
However, the money they pooled together (Rs 200 per sangam from farmers) is not enough to complete the work, the farmers said. They said they would welcome any help from social workers and mostly from the government to come to their assistance.
“Rainwater this year is not sufficient and many farmers in Tuiṭhaphai Valley (Khuga Valley) are unable to continue their paddy cultivation. I appeal on behalf of the farmers to the state government led by chief minister Biren Singh to help these farmers immediately. If they don’t get any help, they will lose a year’s harvests and that will compound their economic woes,” Zote said.
