United Women’s Rights Defenders (UWRD) on Monday urged the chief minister to remove “incompetent” Chairperson of Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW) Dr Binota Meinam  immediately from the post of chairpersonship. The provisions of Manipur State Commission for Women Act 2006 empower the state government to remove a sitting chairperson of the MSCW, said UWRD convenor W Prabha in a press statement.

Saying that UWRD is deeply shocked to observe the activities of MSCW under chairpersonship of Binota Meinam, the statement said it is the right time for the Manipur government to remove her from the post of Chairmanship.

UWRD said, “We have witnessed many condemnations against Binota since 2019 to terminate her from the post of Chairperson, MSCW. The motion against her seems to be reasonable after witnessing the recent order of High Court of Manipur suspending the proceedings of Complaint Case no. 42 of 2021 of MSCW.”

It further said in December 2019, it came to know through many social media posts, news and other online campaigns against her that a team of MSCW led by Binota forced one woman to sign a “Deed of Separation” of which a video footage went viral. On another matter, a group of many young people organised a signature campaign to terminate Binota and submitted them to the chief minister which is yet to be converted into action, it added.

UWRD alleged that Binota is not acting as per the rule of law but exercising the power beyond the guiding principles laid down under the MSCW, Act 2006. The Commission was established to work for the welfare of women, however, Binota worked against the welfare of women of the state as observed in a few instances, it said.
