“The deliberate misuse of power will leads to further victimisation of the victims of various forms of violence against women in the state if Binota remains as the Chairperson of the commission,” contended the Centre for Women and Social Upliftment.

Centre for Women and Social Upliftment (CWSU) demanded removal of Manipur State Commission for Women chairperson Meinam Binota from her post at the earliest “for the welfare of the women victims and for the future of women of Manipur” and in the “best interest of the victim”.
In a statement on Sunday, CWSU condemned the “autocratic principle exercised by the chairperson of the Manipur State Commission for Women by violating the commission’s power in more than two incidents”.
CWSU alleged that on November 26, 2019, Binota forced a woman to sign a “Deed of Divorce”, which the women empowerment centre said, was beyond the powers and function of the commission. The case No. 42 of 2021 of MSCW was recently suspended by the High Court of Manipur, it mentioned.
“The deliberate misuse of power will leads to further victimisation of the victims of various forms of violence against women in the state if Binota remains as the Chairperson of the commission,” it contended.
The commission was constituted on September 15, 2006 as a statutory body at the state level to safeguard the interests of women and its mandate is very wide covering — almost all aspects of women’s development. And if such a person who is in charge of the women commission continues to exercise her power beyond the commission’s Act, then the question will arise on what will be the future of women rights in Manipur, the centre argued.
