718 Myanmar nationals enter Manipur; Government tells Assam Rifles to take strict action, prevent entry

The chief secretary said the Myanmar nationals entered Manipur between Saturday and Sunday last week and were taking refuge in seven locations of Chandel district — Lajang, Bonse, New Samtal, New Lajang, Yangnomphai, Yangnomphai Saw Mill, and Aivomjang. These locations fall under the porous Indo-Myanmar border areas.

The government of Manipur has sought detailed report from Assam Rifles (AR) Authority to clarify on the “facts and compelling circumstances/reasons”, as to why and how 718 Myanmar nationals were allowed to enter into India in Chandel District without proper travel documents. The state government has also strictly adviced to push back those 718 illegal Myanmar nationals immediately.

A press release issued by Manipur chief secretary Vineet Joshi on Monday (July 24) stated that as many as 718 Myanmar nationals, including 301 children and 208 women, have entered Manipur’s Chandel district amid ongoing clashes between the military junta and civil forces in Myanmar.

The chief secretary said the Myanmar nationals entered Manipur between Saturday and Sunday last week and were taking refuge in seven locations of Chandel district — Lajang, Bonse, New Samtal, New Lajang, Yangnomphai, Yangnomphai Saw Mill, and Aivomjang. These locations fall under the porous Indo-Myanmar border areas.

“The state government views the fresh illegal entry of 718 refugees very seriously with utmost sensitivity as the same may have international ramifications more particularly in view of the ongoing law and order issues,” said the press release.

The chief secretary has asked the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police, Chandel district to keep biometrics and photographs of all such persons.
