Ukhrul with the rest of the country celebrated the 77th Independence Day at Bakshi Ground, Dungrei, Hungoung, Ukhrul. Deputy Commissioner of Ukhrul, Kengoo Zuringla hoisted the tri colour national flag.

St. George School (Girls) contingent bagged the 1st position in the march pass competition while Oriental Naga Academy (Girls) and the Higher Themzan School were adjudged the second and third position respectively. The celebration also saw a myriad of performances, including Tangkhul traditional dances, choreography, music, etc.
Speaking at the occasion, Kengoo Zuringla sttaed that “Since the creation of Ukhrul District in November 1969 known as Manipur East District, Ukhrul has witnessed and experienced progress and development in many areas of social, health and education, to name a few.
“The governmental setup with many different departments have created employment, improvement in standard of living, access to information and knowledge, medical facilities, better communication through building of roads and bridges, construction of community facilities and so on.
“At this juncture, we stand at a point where much has happened in the district. Different departments function, coordinate and make concerted effort for continuous progress.
“The Ukhrul District Police continues to play a pivotal role in maintaining peace and safety in the district In response to the State Government’s “War on Drugs” campaign, a combined team of Ukhrul District Police along with District Administration, 6-MR, Forest Department and NAB had carried out extensive destruction of illicit poppy plantation at various places in Ukhrul District from 1 January 2022 onwards. Altogether about 868 acres of illicit poppy plantation have been destroyed. During the same period, over 90 Kg of Brown Sugar and 55 Kg of opium were recovered and seized in different FIR cases and 16 persons were arrested.”
Kengoo Zuringla added “Two new Border Police Outposts are coming up near Border Pillar No. 129 & 130 at Tusom CV and another one at Poi Village near Border Pillar No. 126 and 127. Construction works of the above new Pollce Outposts are in progress. This will check entry of illegal immigrants and import of banned products.
“Women Help Desks have been set up in all 7 Police Stations of Ukhrul District to address the grievances of women and children. Promising youths who are unemployed are vulnerable to social problems like drug addiction and alcoholism t is important to equip them with skills, and create employment. With the right training they can have meaningful careers. The District Skill Committee has formulated plans to provide employment through different training courses. All youths have the opportunity to enroll in the program offered by the District Skill Committee.”
“As we celebrate the hard fought freedom, let us remember that each one must do our part to preserve the legacy of freedom. Freedom of thought and action. We must act to strive. for progress and thirst for new knowledge, act with wisdom in showing our love for our motherland” stated Kengoo Zuringla.
Madam Soso Shaiza, Advisor to National Commission of Women (NCW) of India handover the state award “Exemplary Performance” to the authority of Ukhrul District Hospital under Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana ( ABPMJAY).
