United Committee Manipur (UCM) on Thursday expressed condolences over the demise of Zeliangrong Baudi leader Athuan Abonmai. Athuan Abonmai was gunned by unknown persons after he was abducted from Apollo ground in Tamenglong district headquarters while attending the state government’s “GO to Hills” programme. UCM members observed minute-2 silence and strongly condemned the brutal murder of Athuan Abonmai.
Describing Athuan Abonmai as a leader who stood for unity and integrity of Manipur and propagated the message of peaceful co coexistence amongst the communities in Manipur, UCM said his demise is great loss for all the communities living together in Manipur. He left a permanent void to not only Zeliangrong community but also to Manipur, it added.
Urging the Manipur Government to bring all the culprits involved in the abduction and killing of Athuan Abonmai to book, UCM said it was dreadful that such abduction took place amid heavy security bandobast for the chief minister’s visit.
Meanwhile, Zeliangrong Students’ Union Manipur (ZSUM) also condemned the beastly act of kidnapping and brutal killing of Athuan Abonmai, Advisor, Zeliangrong Baudi (AMN) and former President, Zeliangrong Baudi (AMN) by the irrational stock at Pallong Village Tamei Sub-Division Tamenglong on Wednesday.
In a statement, the ZSUM said it is shocked to witness such barbaric act where no one in this generation expect and would accept such ill tempered being. “Today we lost our great and dynamic multi-faceted leader who stood for truth and speak for the people and Zeliangrong in particulars. His tireless contribution and effort for the people of Zeliangrong will remain forever in the history of Zeliangrong,” it added.

The ZSUM urged the Government of Manipur and Centre to investigate and bring out the culprits and give a benefiting punishment at the earliest so that no such act would happen in the future and appeal to all the Zeliangrong and well wisher and love one to stand firmly until justice is done.
The ZSUM extended its deepest sympathy to the bereave family and condoles during this period of mourning. ”We pray for his soul to give eternal peace on the abode of Almighty God,” said statement issued by Information and Publicity Cell of ZSUM.
All Manipur Students Union and Students’ Union of Kangleipak also issued different statements condemning the brutal murder of Athuan Abonmai who preached against Hill-Valley divide. They demanded the state government to arrest and punish all the culprits involved in the murder.
NPMHR, KIM condemn
Naga Peoples Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR) condemning the kidnapping and brutal killing of Athuan Abonmai on September 22 at Tamenglong said it was pained at how torture and killing of civilians by both state and non-state actors has devastated our land and our homes, expressing its deep anguish and condolences.
Stating that rule of law and justice must prevail to protect the sanctity of life, NPMHR stated that no justification will help salvage the dampened wound caused by the action of the perpetrators. Calling it “senseless actions”, it added “Clearly, the gravity of the situation is beyond the reasoning capacity of the perpetrators, or simply, senseless actions does not matter to them. Because what matters to them is serving their vested interest. We are concerned how vested groups will politicize this tragedy to communalize and divide the people.”
Appealing to all sections of society to remain vigilant, NPMHR stated that, no amount of justification will exonerate what was done to Abonmai.
The apex body of the Kukis, the Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM) condemning the brutal killing of Athuan Abonmai, former president and current advisor of Zeliangrong Baudi (Assam Manipur, and Nagaland) condoled the death and condemned the brutal killing in strongest term.
KIM stated that it was shocked to learn the death of Apou Athuan Abonmai while adding that he was kidnapped by suspected NSCN-IM from Tamenglong District Headquarters. While strongly condemning the alleged brutal killing of Athuan Abonmei, KIM urged the concerned authorities to book the culprits involved at the earliest.
Uripok Abunba Lup
Uripok Abunba Lup (UAL) also condemned the brutal killing of Athuan Abonmai. In a press release the UAL asked the government to investigate and arrest the culprits behind the killing. While demanding the government to punish those responsible for the assassination, UAL said that the abduction and killing of Abonmai who was a leader who tirelessly worked for the unity of all people in Manipur during a programme in which the chief minister himself was attending was a direct challenge to the people of Manipur. The incident indicated the weak governance of the Manipur, said ULA. The organisation also offered condolences to the bereaved family members of Abonmai and prayed that his soul may rest in peace.
