Surrender Looted, Illegal Weapons Within Seven Days: Manipur Governor Appeals to Hill, Valley Communities

Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla has urged both hill and valley communities of the strife-torn state to voluntarily surrender looted and illegally held weapons within seven days, assuring that no punitive action will be taken against those who comply within this period.

According to a press release issued by the Directorate of Information & Public Relations (DIPR), Manipur, undersigned by Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, the state government is deeply concerned about the illegal circulation of arms and ammunition that were either looted or unlawfully taken from various places, including state armories.

“These weapons pose a serious threat to the safety and security of society. To address this issue urgently, the Governor of Manipur has made a request to both valley and hill residents, who have suffered immense hardship for over 20 months due to a series of unfortunate incidents affecting peace and communal harmony,” the release stated.

In the greater interest of restoring normalcy and allowing people to return to their daily activities, the Governor emphasized the need for all communities to come forward to ensure the cessation of hostilities and the maintenance of peace and order in society.

“In this regard, I sincerely request the people of all communities, particularly the youth in the valley and hills, to voluntarily come forward and surrender looted and illegally held weapons and ammunition at the nearest police station, outpost, or security forces camp within the next seven days, effective from today. Your single act of returning these weapons can be a powerful gesture towards ensuring peace. I want to assure you that no punitive action will be initiated if such weapons are returned within the stipulated time,” the Governor stated.

However, the he also asserted that strict action would be taken against those who fail to comply after the expiration of the seven-day period.

“The government is committed to ensuring a peaceful resolution of the situation and safeguarding the future of our youth. Let us rebuild our state together with hope and trust for a brighter future. Come forward and choose peace,” the Governor urged.

The release further highlighted that the people of Manipur, both in the valley and hills, have suffered immense hardship for over 20 months due to a series of unfortunate incidents that have severely impacted peace and communal harmony.

Meanwhile, the central government imposed President’s Rule in Manipur on February 13, just days after Chief Minister N. Biren Singh resigned from his post.
