India-Myanmar border trade will resume on Wednesday, nine months after the border was shielded as precautionary measures after COVID-19 cases surged in both the countries.
The border trade in Sagaing region of Myanmar will resume on Wednesday as COVID-19 infections in the area have declined, informed an official of the Tamu Merchants Association.
“India and Myanmar closed the border in March 2020 due to COVID-19, including the crossing between Tamu township of Myanmar and the Indian town of Moreh,” he said.
Most India-Myanmar border trade passes through the Tamu crossing, and the Reed crossing in Chin state is the second busiest. Officials will enforce health rules when the border trade resumes.
“Border trade will resume on January 6, but there will be some changes as the virus has also spread in India. We need to discuss how to prevent infections while carrying on with trade,” said the official.
“In Tamu, the border market Nan Phar Lone cannot be opened yet. The No 1 border gate will reopen first, and crossings between Tamu and Moreh will be restricted. We will soon announce the rules that people from both sides must follow when trade resumes,” he added.
