Myanmar Tatmadaw on Wednesday handed over five cadres of the proscribed People’s Liberation Army (PLA), the armed wing of the Revolutionary People’s Front (RPF).
According to a report by NDTV, an Indian Air Force plane airlifted the five PLA/RPF cadres on early Wednesday morning from Mynamar’s Mandalay and handed them over to Manipur Police. NDTV while quoting intelligence sources said, “”A special flight brought the five Manipur-based RPF militants from Myanmar and landed at the Imphal airport on Wednesday morning before the handing over of the extremists to the Manipur police. The PLA cadre guerrillas were immediately taken to an undisclosed location by the police and they are being interrogated by senior officials.”
As per the NDTV report, a senior Manipur police officer who does not want to be identified also confirmed the news.
The five cadres have been identified as – Koireng, Angam, Banner, Abi, and Devan, said the report.
According to intelligence sources, these cadres were apprehended a year back during Operation Sunrise carried out by the Tatmadaw against cadres of Northeast Indian armed groups based in the Sagaing region. These five were picked up from Monywa, said NDTV.
This handover comes within a month of the deadly November 13 joint ambush by the PLA and the Manipur Naga People’s Front in Manipur’s Churachandpur district where four jawans of Assam Rifles (AR) were killed along with Colonel Viplav Tripathi, his wife, and their 9-years-old son. NDTV however said that these five cadres were not involved in the Churachandpur district ambush.
