The Central Bureau of Investigation on Saturday filed a chargesheet against nine accused before the Special Judge, CBI Court at Guwahati in connection with the murder of 57-year-old Maring Naga woman Lucy Marem by a mob at Sawombung in Imphal East district on July 15.
According to a CBI source, a case was registered on a request from Manipur Government. The agency took over the investigation of earlier registered at Lamlai Police Station, Imphal East. it was alleged that Lucy Marem, D/o Thoukhal Marem of Beaulahram Village, Palle l, Chandel District was forcibly detained at Sawombung Gate (Ukhrul road), by a mob numbering about 100 persons, including armed miscreants at about 12:10 PM of July 15. She was forcibly abducted towards Keibi village in a car. Subsequently, her dead body was recovered on the same day.
Nine persons, including five women, were arrested within two days by police. CBI investigation revealed that the accused were involved in the incident, said the source.
The chargesheet was filed before the Special Judge CBI Court, Guwahati (designated as per the orders of the Supreme Court India).
The source also said further investigation is continuing including the identification of other accused involved in the case.
It further said the public is reminded that the findings are based on the investigation done by CBI and evidence collected by it. Under the Indian Law accused are presumed to be innocent till their guilt is finally established after a fair trial, it added.
The murder of a Naga woman amid the Meitei-Kuki conflict that claimed more than 100 lives had triggered widespread protests from the Naga community. The Naga’s apex body, United Naga Council (UNC) condemned the killing and termed it a cold-blooded murder. The UNC had observed a 12-hour total shutdown in all “Naga areas” of Manipur demanding the constitution of a judiciary inquiry committee, arrest of all the accused and exemplary punishment to culprits.
