With an aim to curb the drug menace in Manipur, the Manipuri Students’ Federation (MSF) on Monday submitted representations to the chief minister, education minister and director of State Council of Educational and Research Training (SCERT) to include ‘drug use prevention’ in the syllabus of Class 5 and above in the all the schools of the state.

Speaking to media persons, MSF drug affairs secretary Oinam Premdas maintained that the state will be in dire straits if the drug menace is not curbed at the earliest in view of the rising numbers of drug abusers in the state.

Premdas said that on March 25, 2021 a people’s convention was held at Imphal College on ‘incorporating drug use prevention in school syllabus’. It was attended by stakeholders on the issue including social activists, social scientists, psychiatrists, amongst others. They endorsed the inclusion of drug use prevention in school syllabus and accordingly the representation was submitted, he added.

Applauding the state government’s initiatives towards fighting the problem including ‘War on drugs’ campaign, slashing of poppy plantations, seizures of drugs and other substances to reduce demand and supply, Premdas maintained that it would not be enough to curb the menace.

Insisting that the ‘War on drugs’ campaign need to include ‘Drug use prevention’ campaign, he argued that inclusion of drug use prevention in the syllabus will help the students psychologically and morally in staying away from drugs.
