In a simple yet meaningful programme, MLA of 45-Chingai Assembly Constituency, Khashim Vashum on Thursday officially launched the much awaited Ukhrul District Basketball Association at the Conference Hall of Meiphung Production, Hamleikhong, Ukhrul.
MLA Khashim Vashum lauded the members of Ukhrul District Basketball Association for coming up with such an association to nurture young talents from Ukhrul District. He added “In the USA, basketball players are one of the highest paid sports. We have seen many of our people getting employment in different departments through sports. We really need to promote this sport among the coming generation. Not only as a hobby but as a platform to compete with others by nurturing their talents and skills.
“This sport requires energy, stamina and discipline and therefore to be a basketball player one has to keep his body fit and strong. Sports in general is a great extracurricular activity, focusing on health instead of social menace such as substance abuse, alcoholism etc.”

President of Ukhrul District Basketball Association, NS. Franky informed that around 15 basketball lovers on September 20, 2021 came together to create the Association. He added “It has been a long cherished dream to have a basketball association to nourish and nurture the skills of the coming generation from Ukhrul District. Solely with this aim, we have initiated to form this Association to inculcate the spirit of healthy sports and to provide a platforms at higher level.”
The launching programme was attended by representatives of Ukhrul District Sports Association (UDSA), Ukhrul Badminton Association (UDBA), Ukhrul District Boxing Association, Ukhrul District Thang-ta Association and leaders from various CSOs. Mementos of the Ukhrul District Basketball Association were presented to the participants.
