Manipur observes 152nd birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi

While the state level function was held at Gandhi Memorial Hall, Imphal, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) observed the 152nd Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and 117th Birthday Anniversary of Lal Bahadur Shastri at Congress Bhawan, Imphal.

As in other parts of the country and around the world, Manipur also observed the 152nd birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi on Saturday. 

The state level function was held at Gandhi Memorial Hall, Imphal. Governor La Ganesan led others in paging floral tributes to the bust of the father of the nation. 

On the other hand, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) observed the 152nd Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and 117th Birthday Anniversary of Lal Bahadur Shastri at Congress Bhawan, Imphal by paying floral tributes and homage to the late leaders.  

Speaking on the occasion, former chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh stated that the world knows Mahatma Gandhi and his principle of non-violence and how he defeated the British using non-violence as a weapon. 

He further stated that the birthday of the father of the nation is recognised as the International Day of Non-violence by the United Nations.

The observation was attended by AICC senior observer (Manipur) MP Jairam Ramesh, CWC member Gaikhangam, MPCC president N Loken, AICC secretary Victor Keishing, MLAs, former MLAs, MP, PCC office bearers, chiefs of frontal cells and departments. 

After attending the Gandhi Jayanti Celebration, MP Jairam Ramesh visited Khoirenthak Khuman village to meet freedom fighter Achung Kom (DOB January 1915).

Jairam said, “I was privileged to pay my tributes to 106-year old freedom fighter Pu Serto Achung Kom. He contributed to Netaji’s INA in 1943-44 and was then imprisoned by the British for a year. He was awarded a Tamprapatra by the Government of India in 1972. It was wonderful listening to his experiences”. 

The AICC observer was accompanied by Kh. Debabrata, VP MPCC; Hareshwar Goshwami, general secretary MPCC; Ranajit Mukherjee, former AICC secretary research department; Amir Hussain general secretary MPCC; Malemkhomba Salam, state coordinator social media department MPCC and other Congress leaders.
