Manipur Police crackdown includes not only seizures of arms but also stolen vehicles, arrests linked to threat videos, extortion, destruction of illicit poppy cultivation and security along highways.
TFM Report
The sweeping security operation continues in Manipur. Manipur Police, alongside central forces, reported significant progress in curbing armed activities and illegal operations across the state.
On February 22, authorities secured the voluntary surrender of 17 weapons and large ammunition caches, arrested multiple militants linked to extortion and threats, dismantled illegal bunkers, destroyed illicit poppy fields, and recovered stolen vehicles. The coordinated efforts underscore heightened measures to stabilize the tense yet controlled security situation in the region.
- Voluntary Arms Surrender
Following an appeal by the Governor of Manipur, 16 weapons and ammunition were surrendered in Churachandpur District, including an M-16 rifle, AK rifles, grenade launchers, and gelatine sticks. Separately, Imphal East District saw the surrender of a carbine machine gun and over 3,000 rounds of ammunition. The initiative, driven by joint public awareness campaigns by District Police, Assam Rifles, and CRPF, marks a critical step toward reducing armed violence, said a press note released by the Manipur Police.
- Recovery of Arms in Search Operations
Security forces recovered explosives, firearms, and communication devices during raids in vulnerable areas. Highlights include:
– Five 9mm pistols, a country-made machine gun, detonators, and anti-riot shells seized in Imphal East.
– Eight improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and a radio set confiscated in Tengnoupal District.
- Crackdown on Stolen Vehicles
A special police drive recovered five stolen vehicles in Imphal East, including high-end SUVs like Toyota Fortuners and a Tata Safari. Two drivers—Pussam Azamaluddin (28) and Makakmayum Nawaz Khan (23)– were arrested, with authorities warning that such vehicles are often used for extortion and crimes against women.
- Arrests Linked to Threat Video and Extortion
Two members of the banned insurgent group KCP (City Meitei)—Moirangthem Thoiba and Saikhom Lemburs Singh—were arrested for circulating a viral video threatening police commandos. Thoiba, a deserter of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), and Singh were implicated in extortion and illegal arms procurement. A mobile phone and ID card were seized from Singh.
- Destruction of Illicit Poppy Cultivation
Security forces destroyed four acres of illegal poppy plants in Kangpokpi District, burning down four farm huts. An FIR has been registered to probe the cultivation network.
- Dismantling of Illegal Bunkers
Two insurgent bunkers were demolished in Kangpokpi’s Leimakhong area, disrupting militant hideouts.
- Extortion and Drug Busts
– Two 18-year-old UNLF(K) cadres were arrested for extorting money from shops and transport operators in Kangpokpi.
– A 27-year-old man was held at Imphal’s General Post Office for attempting to mail 2.92 kg of suspected marijuana.
- Security for Essential Supplies
Over 500 vehicles carrying essentials were safeguarded along NH-2 and NH-37, with security convoys deployed in sensitive stretches to prevent disruptions.
- Appeal to the Public
Authorities urged citizens to ignore rumours and verify information via the “rumour-free” helpline (9233522822). A renewed appeal was made for the return of looted arms and ammunition to police or security forces.
Ongoing Measures:
A total of 110 checkpoints were operational statewide, with no detentions reported. Police emphasized strict legal action against those threatening security forces or spreading misinformation.
The operations reflect intensified efforts to neutralize insurgent groups like KCP and UNLF(K). The seizure of weapons and focus on stolen vehicles highlight attempts to curb resources used for extortion and violence. As Manipur Police continue their drive, the public’s cooperation remains pivotal to restoring lasting peace, said the press release issued by the police.
