The proscribed United National Liberation Front (UNLF), Manipur led by Koireng commemorated the 7th “Fallen Heroes’ Remembrance Day” (Athoubasing Ningsing Numit) on Saturday (May 18). The day was observed at the party’s central headquarters, the MPA general headquarters, the External Affairs Department headquarters, and various departments and units both within Manipur and outside, said a statement issued by the outfit’s secretary of publicity, M. Shak-Hen.
The outfit has been observing May 18 as “Fallen Heroes’ Remembrance Day” to honour those who have sacrificed their lives in the UNLF’s liberation movement since 1964. Key elements of the observance include flying the party’s flag at half-mast, fasting from 5 am to 5 pm, offering floral tributes to the martyrs, and observing two minutes of silence in their honor. The observance underscores the commitment to intensifying the liberation movement in line with the lofty ideals of sacrifice espoused by the martyrs.
“There would be no meaning to the observation of the Day if we stray from the path chosen by the martyrs,” the statement asserted. The observance culminated with a collective pledge to sacrifice everything in the fight to liberate Manipur, it added.
A statement issued by the outfit’s Central Committee alleged that the ongoing Kuki aggression is a proxy war orchestrated by India, using the Kukis as pawns. A few fifth columnists in collaboration with the colonial government have claimed that “India is not supporting the Meiteis due to the insurgent groups, and the Meiteis must align with India to protect the integrity of Manipur.”
However, such outrageous statements cannot deceive the people, as they now recognize who the true enemy is, the Central Committee stated.
“The deceitful strategies of the foreign regime, internal challenges, and threats from the changing situation in our shelter area must be faced boldly and rationally, instead of allowing these challenges to defeat us,” the statement said.
It is time to analyze the causes of the revolutionary movement’s weakened state and the current challenges, the Central Committee emphasized. Observing “Fallen Heroes’ Remembrance Day” at such a critical juncture holds great significance. The revolutionary groups must rectify past mistakes and advance the movement with strong determination. The indigenous people of Manipur can protect their identity and live with dignity only when the foreign rule is abolished and a ‘people’s government’ is established, it added.
