Indians in Korea (IIK), a prominent organization representing the Indian diaspora in South Korea, on Friday (November 15) 2024 had issued an urgent appeal for the safe and immediate release of six abducted Meitei family members, including women and young children, who were reportedly taken by armed Kuki-Zo-Hmar militants in Manipur on November 11, 2024. The abduction took place in the village of Jakuradhor Karong, Borobekra, Jiribam district.
The victims include 60-year-old Yulembam Rani Devi, an eight-month-old toddler Laishram Lamnganba, two-year-old Laishram Chingheinganba, eight-year-old Telam Thajamanbi Devi, and two other family members whose identities have not been disclosed.
This incident underscores the pressing need for security and stability in the region, where ethnic tensions and violence have intensified in recent months. In a statement, IIK expressed deep concern and solidarity with the affected families, urging authorities and the international community to intervene for the immediate and safe return of the abductees.
IIK also called upon the Government of India to take decisive action, not only to secure the release of the hostages but also to address the broader violence that continues to disrupt life in Manipur. The organization highlighted the adverse effects of the ongoing unrest on civilians, particularly vulnerable groups such as women, children, and the elderly, emphasizing that the situation has become intolerable.
In addition, IIK has received support from various Indian community organizations in Korea, including the Bengali Association of Korea, Korea Tamil Organization, Maratha Mandal Association, Indian Merchant Association of Korea, and the UP Association of Korea. Together, they have appealed for restraint from all parties involved in the conflict and have urged the Indian government to prioritize peace-building efforts and address the underlying issues that are fueling the crisis.
