The Imphal, Nambul, Iril, and Kongba rivers surged beyond danger levels, breaching banks and inundating neighborhoods like Khurai, Lamphelpat, and Thoubal.

Emergency measures deployed

State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been placed on high alert service as evacuation advisories had been issued for floods in Imphal valley. The public have been urged to avoid travel as landslides have been reported in Ukhrul district.

Over 3,200 Localities Submerged

On Sunday, there were reports of houses being damaged and thousands of residents of flood affected areas being displaced as rains continue to lash the state.

The crisis escalated overnight as torrential rains pounded Manipur for a fifth consecutive day. By Sunday (June 1), officials confirmed:

– 883 houses damaged, 3,802 people impacted

Rivers turned destructive: The Imphal River breached at five locations in Imphal East, including Kontha Ahalup. The Nambul and Iril rivers also overflowed, with catchments in Kangpokpi (49mm), Noney (91mm), and Imphal West (82.5mm) receiving intense rainfall. As floodwaters surged into Imphal and its outskirts,  it has been reported that former Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s own Heingang constituency emerged as one of the worst-affected area.

Rescue Efforts Ramp Up Amid Ongoing Deluge

Rescue teams—including NDRF, SDRF, Indian Army, police, and fire services—deployed boats to reach stranded residents. The Imphal River flowed above High Flood Level, submerging roads and trapping communities.

Critical updates are pouring in from Imphal East, West, Kangpokpi, and Noney districts as these distrcits have been worst-hit. Landslide risks persist in hill districts. Authorities warn the threat remains severe, urging citizens to heed alerts and use emergency helplines. With rivers still swelling and soils saturated, Manipur braces for more suffering as the monsoon’s fury refuses to relent.

It may be mentioned that Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla conducted an urgent tour of flood-ravaged areas across Imphal on Saturday (May 31), following relentless rainfall triggering widespread inundation. Inspecting critical zones along the overflowing Imphal River—including Kangla Nongpok Thong and Singjamei Bridge—the Governor had directed officials to prioritize evacuations and relief.
