Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee, working president MLA K Meghachandra on Saturday lashed out at the ruling BJP government of Manipur, while claiming that the “double engine” government has failed to keep its promises.

Addressing media persons at Congress Bhawan, Imphal, MLA Meghachandra asserted that many promises including economic packages and job opportunities were announced by the state government in 2017 in order to form a stable government.

“On July 20, 2017, as per media reports, minister Th Biswajit who is in-charge of Commerce and Industries Department promised to provide 1.5 lakhs jobs per year. But it has failed to materialize,” he said.

And on October 6, 2017, CM Biren also reiterated the same promise, he said and added that the government has “officially lied” to the people of the state.

“How many jobs have been provided in the last five years? The government must clarify to the people,” he asserted.

The Congress leader further said that as per media reports of July 31, 2017, Bhavananda, the then MP (Rajya Sabha), announced that the Union Home Ministry had approved the establishment of 11 additional battalions of IRB in the state.

“Forget about the 11 battalions. Why has the result of the recruitment of a single battalion of IRB not been announced yet,” he asked, while adding that it proved that the BJP government is a “weak government”.

MLA K Meghachandra maintained that all these promises were made to make the then new government more stable and to also to garner the support of the people by making false promises.

“The people will decide in the upcoming election whether to support the government which has lied to them and hoodwinked them with false promises,” he added.

He also accused the central leaders of BJP who frequently visited the state and campaigned in different parts of the state, of being one of the reasons for the increasing number of COVID cases in the state at present.

As per ECI while announcing the poll date on January 8, 57 percent of the eligible people of the state have been vaccinated with the first dose and only 43 percent has received the second dose. The double engine government has failed to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic, he claimed.
