Public Health Engineering Department, Government of Manipur, in collaboration with UDWIM organised district level awareness campaign on “Water and Sanitation For All: Ensuring Access And Equity” at Old UBC building at Khamphasom, Ukhrul on Wednesday.

As part of district level awareness campaign on water and sanitation for all: ensuring access and equity, Chief Engineer of Manipur, Shangreiphao Vashum elaborated on the need to organise such awareness campaigns. He stated, “the main purpose of organising such campaign is to educate the people on ensuring of drinking water and improve water quality for the people. He called for reducing pollution, the safe dumping of solid and liquid waste and minimizing the release of hazardous chemicals and materials and judicious use of water.
Director, Communication and Capacity Development Unit, PHED Manipur, Kh. Leena Devi gave a brief introduction on Swachh Bharat Mission -G, its mission and objective.
State Coordinator SBM -G, Manipur, Rajkumar Somlo, deliberated on the topic of solid waste management.
Liquid Waste Management Expert, WASH, Piyush Kumar spoke on liquid waste management. He stated that access and equity come hand in hand, though the demand may vary from one person to another. Ensuring access and equity of water is a great challenge and requires everyone to come together to achieve the target.
A brief overview of the project was given by N. Kheda Varta Singh, Secretary PHE, Manipur.
The awareness programme was carried out during the first session of the 12th UDWIM Annual General Assembly and was attended by around 1000 women from different Self Help Groups operating in Ukhrul and Kamjong Districts. There are 865 SHG registered under UDWIM.
