The Special Cell of Delhi Police has busted the interstate drug syndicate operating from Manipur and arrested the alleged kingpin from Thoubal district of the state. According to a highly-placed official source, the special cell is planning to conduct more raids in Lilong and other areas in Thoubal district.

The source revealed that during the interrogation of the alleged kingpin, more links have been traced to Lilong in Thoubal District. The Delhi Police is planning to conduct raids on places disclosed by him in Lilong and neighbouring areas Thoubal. More arrests are likely to take place in connection with the case, it added.

The Interstate Drug Syndicate came to light following the arrest of Kalimuddin, a resident of Nadia in West Bengal. Based on his revelation, the alleged kingpin identified as Wasim Khan, a resident of Manipur, was arrested from Thoubal on April 14. Both have been smuggling drugs to Manipur, Bengal, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi-NCR for years, said the police source.

Delhi police Special Cell DCP Rajeev Ranjan has told the media that the police team was gathering information about a syndicate of smugglers in Manipur and Bengal. Meanwhile, information was received that Kalimuddin, a resident of Bengal, would come towards Dhaula Kuan. A police team led by Inspector Chandrika Prasad was formed under the supervision of ACP Sanjay Dutt.

The police team raided and arrested the accused Kalimuddin. Heroin weighing five kilogram was recovered from him, he added.

The source said  Kalimuddin   came to transport the consignment for disposal in the market of Delhi-NCR. During interrogation, it was found that the accused used to bring drugs from Manipur resident Wasim Khan. Based on his disclosure, the police team also arrested Wasim Khan from Thoubal in Manipur on April 14, it added.

The source also said investigation revealed that Kalimuddin lives with his family in Bengal. He worked as a scooter mechanic at the age of 16. In the year 2010, he came in contact with a drug smuggler from his village and started doing this illegal business.

In recent years, Manipur has emerged as one of biggest drug hubs in India. More than 700 drug haul cases have been reported in the state so far. The value of the seizure of drugs like WY tablets, SP capsule, methamphetamine, poppy derivatives like opium, heroin and brown sugar, and other contraband substances in the state runs in hundreds of crores.

It has been Manipur’s border town Moreh has long been the centre of thriving drug smuggling business.  Several multi-core seizures of the Yaba tablets or The World is Yours tablets, which cost Rs 2,000-Rs 2,500 in Bengaluru or the northern states, have been linked to this town situated on the Indo-Myanmar Border.

Besides, Manipur has reported an unprecedented rise in illicit poppy plantation for opium in its hilly regions. The total area under poppy cultivation in hill districts of Manipur was estimated to be 6,000 acres in 2017-18.
