The National Council meeting of the Communist Party of India strongly condemned the brutal murder of Athuan Abonmai and demanded immediate action to arrest the culprits. It also reiterates its demand for deployment of highway protection forces at the two national highways of Manipur at the earliest.
The National Council meeting of the Communist Party of India was held on October 2-4, 2021 at Ajoy Bhavan, New Delhi and passed several resolutions.
The National Council meeting discussed in depth the recent developments in Manipur, as per a statement. The people of Manipur have been experiencing a very disturbing problem of extortion and forced tax collection by the underground outfits even at the very nose of the Army and police.
“There are two lifelines viz NH No. 2 Imphal-Dimapur Road and Imphal-Jiribam NH No. 37 which are passing through Naga dominated areas. Every vehicle moving through those two National Highways has to pay taxes. This is open looting of the people in broad daylight”.
Several memoranda were submitted to the union government for deployment of highway protection forces at these two lifelines without any positive action so far, it said.
The statement also said that recently, on September 22, Athuan Abonmei, a social activist and a political leader who is a dedicated man for the integrity of the state of Manipur, was brutally murdered at Tamenglong in the midst of the state function attended by the chief minister and his cabinet colleagues. Athuan Abonmei was kidnapped in front of the public and security personnel and ultimately found murdered.
