The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) on Monday served a legal notice on Eechel (Ichel) Express for a speculative report published by the morning Manipuri daily on April 9.
The report under the headline, “Congress ki masak Naiba Meeoi Khara BJP da Changlaklaba Yari (Some important personalities of congress are likely to join BJP)” speculated about a possible exodus of some key congress leaders (without naming them) to the BJP.
“The State Legal Department, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee considers it to be a ridiculous publication as to without mentioning those names, the publication has been made making a mocking tone to lower the reputation of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee in the estimation of right thinking members of the society,” said the notice issued by Chairman, State Legal Department of MPCC N. Jayanta Kumar Singh.
The notice further said, “The State Legal Department, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee would like to know who are those congressmen who are joining BJP as Editor, Eechel Express must be knowing those persons. It is requested that you may kindly disclose those names in order to enable the State Legal Department to be informed,”
If such a statement is made without having knowledge of the actual situation, then it amounts to a libelous publication and the State Legal Department may not have any alternative but to take up legal action for defamation and other appropriate proceedings, it added.
