“Pressuring the government to appeal the case will set a bad precedent for the future as it can burden the state with multiple court appeals and bring conflict between the judiciary, the legislature and the executive and vice-versa,” said the joint apex civil bodies of Churachandpur district.

Joint apex civil bodies of Churachandpur District on Monday requested the government not to appeal against the judgement acquitting Lhukhosei Zou on the mere demand of a few “vested” civil organisations, “sponsored” by some political parties. It also warned that they will not remain a mute spectator if these civil societies continue to promote somebody’s “ulterior design”.

A joint release by the Kuki Inpi Churachandpur, Paite Tribe Council, Mizo People Convention, Hmar Inpui, Simte Tribe Council, and United Zou Organization stated that they are “aghast” at the persistent “harassment” meted out to former Chandel ADC chairman Lhukhosei Zou.

“It is more shocking to learn that the agitation, dharnas and pressure exerted to the government to appeal the case to the High Court by some misled civil organisations who are sponsored by political parties and some vested individuals to tarnish the image of the government,” it said.

The joint release further said that during the pendency of the case in 2018-19, these civil organisations demanded a clean and speedy trial of the case and as such the case was speedily and thoroughly conducted unlike any other case and the final judgement was delivered.

The joint apex civil bodies of Churachandpur District also appreciated the court as it performed its duty sincerely and diligently during the trial.

“Pressuring the government to appeal the case will set a bad precedent for the future as it can burden the state with multiple court appeals and bring conflict between the judiciary, the legislature and the executive and vice-versa,” it argued.

It may be mentioned that an ND&PS court on December 17, 2020 acquitted Lhukhosei Zou and six other accused in the 2018 multi-crore drug haul case. Drugs worth Rs 27 crore were seized from the official quarter of the former Chandel ADC chairman. A driver and a helper of Lhukhosei Zou were convicted and sentenced to 15 years imprisonment.
