Alliance for Socialist Unity, Kangleipak (ASUK), an alliance of proscribed armed groups in Manipur, has called for a total shutdown on August 15, India’s Independence Day. The shutdown will be effective from 1:00 AM to 6:00 PM. However, emergency services like rituals, health, medical and education have been exempted from the purview of the shutdown.
A press release issued by S Mangal, Convenor, Publicity committee, ASUK stated that “India’s independence is not part of our history and a false narrative made popular though the enactment of a drama like performance. We should not allow ourselves to be part of it.” The alliance requested the public to support the call and said that “we should not repeat a false history, and should not experience devastation again.
ASUK pointed out that India that was a colony of England and eventually got its independence on August 15, 1947. However, the moment India attained independence, it turned into an “imperial colonial monster”, alleged ASUK.
“To dream to establish an Indian Empire was already hatched by leaders of the Indian independence movement as early as 1930. When the British arrived, India was not even a country or s state, it was a sub-continent which was a mere geographical expression. They tried to converge the twin objectives of independence and integrated territorial entity”, said ASUK. The alliance pointed out that the Indian sub-continent dotted by princely states and the India National Congress considered the states as integral parts of India that could not be separated. This was part of a Congress resolution passed in 1938 at Haripura session.
ASUK argued that thereafter, Indian leaders after 1947 got themselves seriously engaged in an attempt at “expansionism”. The alliance alleged that this attempt “used deceit, enticement, bribery, back-stabbing, kidnapping, blackmailing and even used army for occupying territories in an effort to expand its territory” and gave the examples of how princely states like Travancore, Kamtapur/Cooch Behar, Tripura, Manipur, Junagadh, Hyderabad, Kashmir, Goa and Sikkim were “forcibly annexed” .
The alliance argued that India still has not given up the dream to expand the Indian Empire. “RSS/BJP has even declared the making of an Indian Mega Empire called Akhand Bharat comprising Myanmar, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and China’s Tibet. Hence, the concept of Indian Imperialism is paving the way towards a possible global conflict and World War,” argued ASUK.
