As Prime Minister Narendra Modi prepares to visit Manipur for the first time since ethnic violence erupted over two years ago, the All Manipur United Clubs Organisation (AMUCO) has raised questions about the intent and timing of the trip.

Speaking to the media, AMUCO president Nando Luwang said the people of Manipur were left confused by the last-minute announcement of the Prime Minister’s itinerary. “Every visit of the Prime Minister to any state must be an official visit. But we are confused whether his proposed visit to Manipur is official or not. Even today, there was no official confirmation until the Chief Secretary announced it—just one day before,” Luwang remarked.

He questioned the secrecy surrounding the schedule, asking, “Why was it not declared earlier? Why create confusion for the people of Manipur? What is the hidden agenda behind this visit?”

On expectations from Modi’s visit, the AMUCO chief was blunt: “We don’t like anything from the Prime Minister right now. Manipur is burning. Instead of solving the problem, they are trying to create more problems and offering some projects. That cannot console us.”

Luwang said the people of Manipur wanted dignity and peace, not projects. “We have the right to live with dignity and pride. The value of the people of Manipur and their lives cannot be compromised or balanced with others. This is our demand,” he asserted.
