World Environment Day was celebrated at Leivat, Hoomi Village, Ukhrul District, the originating place of the Thoubal River.

As in other parts of the world, the Hoomi Katamnao Long on Saturday celebrated the World Environment with an aim to generate awareness about the significance of nature. In resemblance to this year, the student’s union planted saplings of pine, cherry, oak and other locally available species of trees at Leivat, Hoomi Village, Ukhrul District.
Leivat is a very important geographical landmark of Manipur. It is the originating place of Thoubal River, a lifeline to many people in the hills and valley of Manipur.
President of Hoomi Katamnao Long, Ramwung Khengshee informed that more than 2000 saplings of trees were planted, covering 4 hectares of area and more than hundred people participated in today’s celebration.
Speaking to this correspondent, Chonngam Pheirim, executive member of Hoomi Katamnao Long said that “the main objective of maintaining Leivat area is to increase water quality of Thoubal River. By preserving this forest we can provide better quality of drinking water and sufficient water for irrigation purposes in Manipur. Secondly, to increase air quality. Through protection and conservation of this area, we believe we will get fresher air. Thirdly, the Hoomi Katamnao Long aims to promote Leivat as an ecotourism attraction and have planted various types of flora and faunas”.
Chuithan Horam, village elders narrated that the villagers have been conserving and protecting the Leivat area for the past many years. He called upon the concerned authority to give a helping hand in protecting and conserving the Leivat area, the originating place of Thoubal River.
He urged the people and villagers settling along the Thoubal River to conserve and protect the range. He informed that huge trees have been conserved and protected in the Leivat area since time immemorial. He sincerely and earnestly appealed to the Government of Manipur to extend help for their conservation.
