Condolences continue to pour in on the demise of Phanjoubam Sakhi Leima, popularly known as Ima Sakhi. She passed away on Sunday due to an illness at her home near Wangkhei Meihoubam Lampak, Imphal. She was 85.
In its condolence message, United Committee Manipur (UCM) said that Ima Sakhi served as the president of Apunba Manipur Kanba Ima Lup (AMKIL), a component organisation of UCM.
Apart from playing key roles in the functioning of UCM, Ima Sakhi led from the front in major issues of Manipur and stood for the unity and integrity of the state, it stated.
“Her demise is an irreparable loss to Manipur,” UCM added.
Members of UCM observed a two-minute silence at its office, with the prayer for peaceful resting of the departed soul at the heavenly abode.
On the other hand, the National Identity Protection Council (NIPCO) also observed a two-minute silence honouring Ima Sakhi.

Amongst the significant contributions of Ima Sakhi, mentioned may be made of her role in the beginning of the movement against illicit substances, against AFSPA, movements to safeguard the territorial integrity of the state, demands for Inner Line Permit System, and peaceful coexistence amongst the different communities of Manipur, it added.
A prominent Ima in various social and political movements of the state, Ima Sakhi was amongst the 12 Imas who disrobed themselves in front of the Assam Rifles HQ in Imphal on 15 July 2004, to protest against the rape and murder of Manorama Thangjam.
