As many as 15 CSOs have raised suspicion over the circumstances leading to the abduction and brutal killing of former president and advisor of Zeliangrong Baudi (AMN) Athuan Abonmai.

A joint press conference was held on Friday at AMSU HQ, Imphal by AMKIL, UPF, NIPCO, UPACCO, MAPI Council, CADA, EECHAL, THANIL, UMO, Nongpok Leingak Apunba Nupi Lup, NIMPAL, ANUL, Nupi Samaj, Tammi Chingmi Apunba Nupi Lup, and Thoubal Ima.

NIPCO president Thongam Manihar wondered whether the killing of Athuan Abonmai was preplanned as he was abducted right in front of security forces. He also demanded that the case should be handed over to the NIA and the suspension of some police personnel was not enough. The CSOs also extended support to the joint action committee formed in connection with the killing, while condemning the incident.

Manihar also asserted that the state government should take action knowing the sentiment of the people of the state. The culprits involved should be booked and brought to justice. Even the SP and DC of Tamenglong should be investigated, he demanded.

Manihar also maintained that every community of the state should be united in demanding justice. If it went unpunished, such an incident might repeat in the future, he warned.

Expressing shock over the incident, AMKIL president in charge, Lourembam Nganbi maintained that the killing of Abonmai has exposed the failure of the state machinery. While innocent individuals are arrested for exercising their right of freedom of speech and expression in the valleys, it is shocking that an individual was abducted right in front of those security forces, she added. If the state government cannot protect the lives of people, then what is the meaning of development, she asked.

Praising the late social worker as someone who relentlessly worked for a united Manipur, she said that Abonmai’s killing is an irreparable loss to the state. She also assured that the CSOs of the valleys will extend its support to the family of the deceased and the JAC in its fight for the justice of the killing.

On the other hand, members of Youth Forum for Protection of Human Rights staged a candle light protest at Jadonang Memorial Park, Keishampat demanding justice for Abonmai’s killing.
