COVID-19 claimed one more journalist from Manipur, as a staff reporter of Imphal Times, an eveninger, succumbed to the dreaded disease at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) on Friday night. So far four scribes have succumbed to COVID-19 in the state.
Lairenjam Bijen was hospitalized on July 19 at RIMS and was tested positive for COVID-19. He was admitted on the same day and then shifted to the Trauma Centre of RIMS on July 20. His health gradually deteriorated and passed away at around 9:49 pm on Friday.
He is survived by his wife Leirenjam (Ongbi) Sangeeta Devi and a daughter. A resident of Sagolband Tera Sapam Leirak, Imphal, he joined Imphal in 2016. He also worked as a professional video editor and was a part of the production of several documentaries. He was 45 years old.
Meanwhile, All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU) mourned the demise of Lairenjam Bijen. Journalists working in different media houses of the state, on Saturday lighted candles at the memorial pillar erected inside the complex of Manipur Press Club, Imphal, in his honour. Floral tributes were also offered to the portrait of the deceased.
