Loken’s appointment came after six days of political uncertainty and speculations in the state, sparked off after the former MPCC president Govindas Konthoujam tendered his resignation from the post. Loken, who is an MLA from Nambol assembly constituency, is the senior most amongst the vice presidents of the state unit of the Congress party.

In a show of strength, the party held a media briefing on Saturday at the Congress Bhawan, Imphal, along with senior leaders of the party including CLP leader O Ibobi, CWC member Gaikhangam, MLA TN Haokip, MLA Chaltolian Amo, MLA K Ranjit, MLA Fajur Rahim, and other office bearers of MPCC.

Maintaining that AICC president Sonia Gandhi has given him a big challenge by appointing him as an MPCC interim president just few months ahead of the ensuing 2022 state general election, Loken said, he will shoulder it with the consultation of senior leaders.

Loken also informed that a roadmap for the upcoming state general election will be chalked out soon, while exuding confidence that the Congress party will come back in power.

Meanwhile, AICC deputed Manipur-in-charge Bhakta Charan Das maintained that not a single MLA has quit the party and that everyone is intact. He also claimed that the crisis has been resolved.

The senior leaders also congratulated and blessed the newly appointed interim president, while maintaining that it was a great day for the party and the country as Mirabai Chanu clinched a silver medal in the Tokyo Olympics, 2020 on Saturday.

It may be mentioned that the 52-year-old interim president from Leimapokpam Mayai Leikai was first elected as an MLA from Nambol AC in 1995 on an MPP ticket. Re-elected in 2002 on an INC ticket, he has represented the AC five times.
