In a midnight announcement, the Manipur government on Thursday declared “total curfew” from July 18, 2021 for ten days.
The Health Department, Government of Manipur issued a public notice to this effect.
The state government took the decision in view of the need to take stringent measures to break the chain of transmission as there is wide prevalence of Delta variant of COVID-19 in Manipur.
Only essential activities related to vaccination, covid testing, medical services, water supply, power supply, telecom/internet services, air travel and agricultural activities would be allowed, the notice stated, adding that formal Orders will be issued separately.
The notice signed by principal secretary (Health), Government of Manipur, V Vumlunmang also requested all to cooperate in tackling COVID-19.
On the other hand, chief minister N Biren Singh, in a video message released at midnight, desperately appealed to the public for cooperation during the total curfew. He also urged the public to collectively fight in curbing the spread of the dreaded virus.
He also asserted that state forces and paramilitary forces will be deployed during the curfew.
Apart from the essential services, July 21 would be exempted for the Meetei-Pangal community on account of Idul-Zuha. But he appealed to the community to adhere to COVID Appropriate Behavior while celebrating the day.
After more than two months of restrictions imposed by the state government, Manipur continues to witness an alarming number of new cases and deaths with a positivity rate above 10 per cent. The state reported more than 1,000 fresh cases on Wednesday and Thursday.
