All Loktak Lake Area Fishers Union, Manipur (ALLAFUM) on Saturday observed the World Environment Day at Champu Khangpok Floating Village, Langolsabi, Loktak Lake.

The observation aimed towards creating awareness to understand the changing ecological characters and the need to restore the affected ecology of Loktak lake that is destroyed by developmental aggression, untreated sewage, pollutants, silt entering the lake through different rivers and rivulets, etc.

The observation was marked under the theme “Save Loktak for the Future Generation”. ALLAFUM secretary Oinam Rajen highlighted that although the observation of World Environment Day by the UN started in 1974, the union started observation in 2010 and has been successfully observing and organising the event since then.

The union urged the people of Manipur to be more cautious about wetlands such as Lamphelpat, Yaralpat, Akampat, etc drying up due to different factors and other threats to the environment and ecological character of Manipur.

This year’s theme of the Observation is “Re-imagine. Recreate. Restore.” as this year marks the beginning of the United Nations’ Decade on Ecosystem Restoration and the global host for the observation this year is Pakistan.
