These days I observe, read or hear of a number of good initiatives to prevent drug addiction and drug smuggling. But the question is are we missing the woods for the trees?
The need of the hour is a really harsh punishment for drug smugglers. Then only all criminals involved in drug smuggling will be deterred. Processions, making faces or tall promises on TV or through the microphone or social media or in public are naught without a real harsh punishment. Only a tough punishment will scare the perpetrator of this menace. The need of the hour is to ensure that they get punished- and get punished real hard.
In Singapore, there is hardly any drug issue or drug-related crime, because, there they have only one punishment for the drug smuggling – ‘death’.
This they ensure is carried out. Hence deters those who even think of being involved in drug smuggling.
