Indian Army 12 Para Special Forces have “mistakenly” shot two civilians – Nokphua Wangpan and Ramwang Wangsu in Chasa Village in Tirap District of Arunachal Pradesh on Friday evening. The forces opened fire at the two while they were returning home from a river after fishing late evening. The two were airlifted to the Assam Medical College in Dibrugarh and are said to be out of danger.
This incident followed almost three months after 13 civilians were killed in an alleged army operation in Oting village of Mon district in Nagaland.
In a video, now widely circulated in social media platforms, one army officer of the 12 Para admitted the mistake of shooting the two without warning. “As an officer, I take full responsibility as the incident has happened under my command,” the officer said.
The officer further said, “I, as an officer, take full responsibility for his treatment and compensation to the family. The police are coming, if you want to lodge an FIR, I am ready to even sign it as an officer. My boys won’t go from here until the issue is resolved.”
This is not the first such incident reported from the Tirap district in recent times. On March 21, two suspected cadres the National Socialist Council of Nagalim or the NSCN (I-M) were killed. However, a day later, the NSCN issued a release stating that of the two, one was an office-bearer of the NSCN while the other was a civilian.
