The three-day State-level Workshop on Skill Upgradation/ Capacity Building on Pottery & Clay Modeling kicked off on Friday at Tribal Research Institute, Manipur.
The workshop is part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations organised by Tribal Research Institute Manipur under Department of Tribal Affairs and Hills, Government of Manipur in collaboration with Imphal Art College and will end on November 22, 2021, according to official sources.
Speaking as chief guest at the inaugural function of the workshop, additional chief secretary Letkhogin Haokip urged the trainees to learn from the experts and make use of time wisely and change society.
Speaking as guest of honour, additional secretary, (Tribal Affairs and Hills) Kengoo Zururingla stated that in a world that is fast developing and ever evolving, art in its various forms is a great field of challenges that makes one to explore deeper and higher in upgrading skills to make pottery and clay modeling sustainable while preserving the tradition of the society, telling a story in the art, depicting beauty and glory in itself.
She went on to add that, one can make pottery and clay modelling a hobby, for another it is economic activity. From the daily traditional uses of clay pots to sculpting as fine art, this has a great potential for enhancing the earning capacity, in addition to its regular means of livelihood.
Upgrading skills to deliver custom-make orders can greatly benefit an artist/ sculptor. The use of technology is a trend in this generation that leverages the potters in their earning capacity. To increase the earning of the artisans, modern machinery is introduced alongside additional skill and product training to improve not only the productivity but also the wages of the artisan, she added.
Tribal Research Institute under Tribal Affairs and Hills, Government of Manipur provided such opportunities for interested entrepreneurs, and beginners providing hands-on training experience. The workshop envisions a beginning of a destiny of creating job opportunities for many potential young artists, pave a way to find clay and pottery a meaningful expression of their creativity and livelihood as well.
