Over a thousand Meiteis from all walks of life participated in a peaceful sit-in held on Saturday (August 5, 2023), at Freedom Park, Bangalore to protest against the mayhem in Manipur since May 3 following ethnic violence between Kukis and Meiteis. The sit-in was organised by Karnataka Meitei Association (KMA), with the due approval and support from the local authorities.
The primary objective of the sit-in was asking the the relevant authorities to to find a final solution to the alarming issue of Narco-Terrorism, which poses a serious threat to national security. The participants also resolved not to support the demand for separate administration by the Kuki community. The association firmly stood for the territorial integrity of Manipur, the
restoration of peace in the state, and the implementation of the one state one administration policy, said a press release issued by KMA.
Over 1000 participants, including students, professionals, and eminent personalities from both Karnataka and Manipur, actively took part in the peaceful protest. Their collective presence showcased a unified call for harmony, understanding, and dialogue between the communities, urging them to renounce violence and embrace peace.
The sit-in protest witnessed an array of influential speakers, including representatives from Meitei, Naga, Nepali, and local Kanadigas communities. Among the notable names were Mr. Khuraijam Athouba, the spokesperson of COCOMI, renowned celebrity fashion designer Brother Robert Naorem, esteemed social activist Rohan Philem, Bharat Dal president Mr. Ganesha Narayan, and the celebrated singer and music composer Sorri Senjam, who passionately addressed the pressing issues plaguing Manipur.
The sit-in protest adopted the following 4-point resolution.
1 Putting an end to illegal immigration and exploitation in Manipur:
The protesters voiced their concerns over the influx of illegal immigrants and the subsequent exploitation that affects the region’s socio-economic fabric.
2 Combating narco-terrorism: The gathering united to address the grave issue of narco-terrorism, acknowledging its severe impact on the peace and stability of Manipur.
3 Opposing separate administration for Kukis: The protesters strongly advocated for the unity and integration of the Kuki community within the broader framework of Manipur’s administration.
4 Halting poppy plantations and drug trafficking: The sit-in protest resolutely aimed to curb poppy plantations and drug trafficking, which have grave consequences on public health and the well-being of Manipuri society.
The vibrant event garnered media attention, capturing the collective voices of people from different backgrounds, united in their determination to bring about positive change in Manipur. The participants demonstrated their commitment to fostering harmony, inclusivity, and a safer future for their beloved state.
The Karnataka Meitei Association said it believes that a peaceful and inclusive approach is essential in resolving the longstanding issues faced by Manipur. By raising their voices in solidarity, the participants demonstrated their commitment to building a secure and prosperous future for the state and its inhabitants.
