The use of the National Security Act of 1980 by the present Manipur Government has become ubiquitous. Now, an intending candidate of the upcoming state elections slated to be held in the early part of 2022 has been sent to jail invoking the Act after he was allegedly granted bail.

The intending candidate, Yumnam Shanta of Keirao AC was arrested by police on June 5. But he was granted bail by a court on June 14, according to his daughter Yumnam Nganthoi. Surprisingly, the NSA was invoked and Shanta was sent to jail, she said while expressing her angst against such treatment of her father.

“The concerned authorities should clarify why he was detained under NSA. The government should stop arresting people on flimsy charges,” Nganthoi said while appealing to release her father at the earliest.

Womenfolk of Kiyamgei Maning Leikai, Kiyamgei Awang Leikai, Keirao Makting, Lilong Arapti Mapan, and Khoirom Leikai staged a sit-in against the arrest on Tuesday at Kiyamgei Maning Leikai Community Hall. Nganthoi also participated in the sit-in.

Meanwhile, Shanta’s wife Mombi Leima distributed eatables to the families who are in containment zones due to COVID-19 at Kiyamgei Maning Leikai, Mayai Leikai and Awang Leikai.

Mombi said that her husband used to work for the welfare of Keirao AC. She condemned the detention of her husband under NSA without informing the family members after he was granted bail. Maintaining that her husband is innocent, Mombi appealed to release Shanta at the earliest.
