An MBBS student of RIMS, Sanatom Athokpam of Khurai Thangjam Leikai was allegedly found dead inside his hostel room on March 15.

The agitation over the death of Sanaton Athokpam, an MBBS student of RIMS, intensified on Tuesday as activists of four major student bodies of the state and Justice for Sanaton tried to storm the Administration Block of RIMS.
Activists of All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU), Manipuri Students’ Federation (MSF), Democratic Students’ Alliance of Manipur (DESAM), Apunba Ireipakki Maheiroi Singpanglup (AIMS) and Justice for Sanaton Athokpam (JSA) congregated at the gate of RIMS A-Block demanding to meet the director.
RIMS security and state police personnel stopped them and locked the gate. The protestors then sat in front of the gate and started sloganeering to let them meet the director, demanding the director to come out and also against concealing facts about the death.
After a while, more additional security personnel came and tried to disperse the protestors. As scuffle broke out, the police used chilly spray and dispersed the protestors.
Later, representatives of different Ima Lups and JSA addressed the media at Khurai Thangjam Leikai. Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba, Manipur president L Memchoubi condemned the action of the police towards the agitating student and JSA activists. She also condemned the silence of the students and authority of RIMS, and vowed to continue agitation until the truth is revealed about the death of Sanaton Athokpam.

A magisterial enquiry has been set up to investigate the death. The family has been crying foul and alleging that Sanaton was murdered. The JSA has been spearheading the protest for the last one month.
