The Joint Action Committee (JAC) against the Brutal Murder of Athuan Abonmai appealed to the public to co-operate with 48 hours road blockade on National Highways 29 and 37 from Monday midnight till September 29 midnight and 24-hours State-wide shutdown and other forms of agitation till the demands are not met.
Speaking to media persons at the residence of Athuan Abonmai at Tarung on Monday, Majabung Gangmei said that exemptions will be made to medical, water supply, electricity and media personnel.
He asserted that JAC will not agree with the transfer of deputy commissioner and superintendent of police of Tamenglong and demanded that they have to be suspended from their post. Since they were not suspended, the postmortem which was supposed to be conducted on Monday has been postponed for Tuesday.
He also conveyed that during the second round of talk with JAC members on Monday, chief minister N Biren Singh assured that the case will be definitely handed to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and the state government is initiating the process. He reiterated that JAC will go ahead with the sequence of agitations and added that the JAC is ready for any further agitations if the demands are met.
Meanwhile, sit-ins were staged by the JAC and others at different places. Protests were held at Mujikhul, Majorkhul, Lungdaijang, Ramgailong, Namthanlong, Tarung, Dimdaijang. The protestors held placards that read — Arrest the culprit immediately, no justice no rest, punish the culprits, where is the law of the land, Am I next justice for Athuan Abonmai?
Manipur University Students’ Union (MUSU) also held a candlelight vigil in front of the main gate of the varsity. MUSU general secretary Kangujam Nareshkumar asserted that the fact that the state government has not been able to arrest the culprits involved is unfortunate and should not be taken lightly. He recalled Athuan as a leader who preached fearlessly for the peaceful coexistence of different communities. The authorities should nab the culprits at the earliest, failing which different forms of agitations will be launched.
The students held placards that read — Justice for Athuan Abonmai, No justice No peace, Don’t forget we will not be silent, Stop killing of innocent people, we will not be silent until justice is given, amongst others.
